'Invest in Education for a Stronger Economy'

CHENNAI: Registrar of Anna University S Ganesan has pushed for greater investment in education, especially higher education, to boost the economy. “The only way to build a strong economy is from the grass roots, and the grass roots of development is education,” said Ganesan.

Speaking at the ninth Graduation Day of Meenakshi College of Engineering, Ganesan lauded the efforts of A N Radhakrishnan, founder of the college, for providing quality education across various fields including medicine, arts and engineering. He added, “The scenario of higher education is deplorable. Among the top 200 universities, ranked by the London Times recently, the US had 55 colleges, while the UK and Australia shared 30 each. In Asia, Japan had 11 and China had six, while India had only one, and that too not a university but the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur.”

Ganesan expressed the hope that the future held promise as far as higher education was concerned. He said, “At the time of Independence we had only 25 colleges. But now we have 20 Central universities, 200 State universities, 100 deemed universities and over 25,000 colleges, and this will continue growing.”

A total of 681 students were awarded their graduation certificates during the function and 18 received university ranks.
