Engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu may take down IT courses Information Technology courses are no longer the buzz word for engineering colleges now, at least in Tamil Nadu where many institutes may do away with their IT and Computer Science courses from the next academic session. 20 engineering colleges in the state have already sought permission from the affiliating bodies to shut down IT courses while one engineering college has asked so for computer science course reported a newpaper daily. When some colleges are looking forward to shut courses with less students applying for the courses, some are lessening the number of seats allotted for the courses. IIT Guwahati brings India into top 100 Global University Rankings list The prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati has made it to the world's top 100 university rankings, bringing India for the first time on the list. IIT Guwahati  is the only Indian educational institute in the 2014 league table of "100 Under 50" institutions released by the Times Higher Education (THE) magazine on Wednesday. The Indian institute shares the 87th rank on the list with Portugal's New University of Lisbon and Australia's University of Western Sydney. SC allows Himachal government to revive commission to regulate universities The Himachal Pradesh government has got the approval of the Supreme  Court  to revive its commission to monitor 16 private universities and an equal number of private institutes, mainly engineering colleges, according to a news report. A division bench of Justice T.S. Thakur and Justice C. Nagappan on Thursday suspended the Himachal Pradesh High Court judgment quashing the Himachal Pradesh Private Educational Institutions (Regulatory) Act of 2010. The high court on October 19 last year set aside the act that empowered the Private Educational Institutions Regulatory Commission, set up in 2010 under the act, to regulate the universities. The state, which had moved the apex court, pleaded that the regulatory body was required to maintain quality of education and monitor commercialisation of education. Tamil Nadu Class 12 Results 2014: More than 90 pc students pass the exam The Tamil Nadu Class 12 results 2014 were declared earlier today i.e. May 9, 2014 and an astounding 90.06 per cent of the students having appeared in the Tamil Nadu board HSC (Class 12) exam have passed. A total of 8.26 lakh candidates appeared for the Tamil Nadu Board Class 12 exams 2014 from 408 higher secondary schools. President Pranab Mukherjee: Enhance quality of graduates to increase employability President Pranab Mukherjee has said that determined efforts are required to enhance the quality of graduates so that the overall skill pool is employable. Speaking at the 36th annual convocation of the  Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad , the President was quoted by IANS as saying: The India Skills Report 2014 has revealed that only 52 per cent of engineering graduates and 34 per cent of our overall skill pool are employable. This situation must change. "We must make a determined effort to enhance the quality of our graduates," he said. JEE (Advanced) 2014: 17 per cent eligible candidates choose not to register After the registration process for Joint Entrance Exam ( JEE  ) Advanced 2014 closed on May 9 at 5 pm, nearly 26,000 candidates who qualified to take the entrance scheduled on May 25 for entry to IITs have opted out of it, a daily reported. According to an IIT official, the 17 per cent who chose to opt out of JEE (Advanced) are  aspiring a seat in the National Institutes of Technology (NITs), the Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIIT) and state engineering institutions that will offer seats on the basis of JEE (Mains) merit list. The scene was similar last year as well when  1.26 lakh of the 1.5 cleared who were eligible had appeared in the JEE-Advanced, suggesting around 24,000 had opted out after the first stage - lower than this year's 26,000. Punjab Board Class 12 Results 2014: Statistics Punjab School Education Board ( PSEB  ) has declared the names of the toppers and the statistics of the results for class 12th for which examination was conducted on March this year. As per the overall summary of the results total pass percentage recorded this year is 84.42 that is much higher than that recorded last year at 79 per cent . Directorate of Education sits on order for disabled kids’ seats NEW DELHI: While many parents and schools are treating the nursery matter as closed for the year, for parents of children with disability, it is far from over. They are wondering why high court orders in their favour haven't been notified by the Directorate of Education.  The latest order, issued on May 7, 2014, directed DoE to issue notices to schools with facilities to reserve two seats for children with special needs (CWSN) for this academic year and to do it "within 24 hours from today (May 7)"; DoE hasn't. The department has, in fact, filed a review petition.  DoE had submitted in HC that 18 schools inspected by them have the facilities required to educate CWSN; 19 do not and another eight are yet to be inspected. St Stephen’s College declares its admission schedule NEW DELHI: St Stephen's College will start admissions on June 2, 2014, along with the rest of Delhi University. The last date for applying is June 16. The cut-offs will be announced soon and the list of candidates selected for interviews will be posted on June 17 and 18. Interviews will be held from June 20 to July 5. "Like last year, the mode of application shall be limited to online facility. UK 'second best education in Europe' The UK is in second place among European countries and sixth overall in a global education league table. South Korea is top, with three other Asian countries and Finland making up the top five, in rankings from education and publishing firm, Pearson. The rankings include higher education as well as international school tests - which boosted the UK's position. Pearson chief executive John Fallon highlighted the economic importance of improving education and skills. These latest international comparisons, compiled for Pearson by the Economist Intelligence Unit, emphasise the success of Asian education systems, with South Korea, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong in China rated as the highest performing. Schools in Lucknow get five holidays due to polls School children here are looking forward to a string of holidays from April 28 to May 1, thanks to the polling schedule in the state capital. Monday and Tuesday have been declared holidays because teachers have been sent for poll duties. Schools are also closed on the election day April 30 (Wednesday) as balloting will take place at school premises where the polling stations have been set up. All major schools like the City Montessori School and the Delhi Public School have declared holidays. Sikh school in Britain reassures parents on pupils' safety A Sikh school in Britain has reassured its students and their parents that its premises are completely safe after it was claimed that the school was constructed on contaminated soil, media reported Monday. Diggers at free school, Khalsa Secondary School in Stoke Poges in southeast Britain, were reportedly found to be taking up turf of contaminated soil during a re-development work in the premises, the Trinity Mirror reported Monday. It has been claimed by the nearby local village residents that the site is a possible threat to pupils and staff as the soil is severely contaminated. The school site used to house the Fulmer Research Institute, which opened in the 1950s. See if nurseries can have more seats for inter-state category, says SC The  Supreme Court  Monday asked the  Delhi government 's education department to explore the possibility if five to six seats each could be increased in the nurseries of private schools to accommodate entrants under the inter-state category. A bench of Justice H.L.Dattu, Justice M.Y.Eqbal and Justice S.A.Bobde asked the education department to get back after speaking to private schools as it directed the listing of the matter Tuesday for further hearing. Senior counsel Raju Ramachandran, appearing for the education department, told the court that the admissions in nursery sections have to take place in private schools only and urged it to pass an order directing creation of additional five to six seats in each school to accommodate toddlers under the inter-state category. Australian varsity signs MoU with two oldest IITs In a bid to strengthen relationship with India in the areas of research and teaching, an Australian university has signed agreements with two Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). The University of Wollongong (UOW) in New South Wales (NSW) has signed memoranda of understanding (MOU) with two of the oldest and most prestigious institutes, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Bombay, a university statement said. The MoU, which was signed earlier this month, will enhance its existing collaboration with IIT Bombay in electrical power systems to other allied areas including the integration of renewable energy resources. "Staff at UOW and IIT Bombay have already begun an exchange of higher degree research students and joint external research grant applications," the statement said. The UOW also recently developed a collaboration with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in New Delhi and the government of Gujarat.
Revealed: Girls outshine boys in all school subjects Research has revealed that girls have outshone boys in all school subjects for nearly a century. The findings of the research may help break the stereotype that boys do better than girls in science and mathematics. Grades of girls have been consistently higher than that of boys across several decades with no significant changes in recent years, said the study. "Although gender differences follow essentially stereotypical patterns on achievement tests in which boys typically score higher on math and science, females have the advantage on school grades regardless of the material," said Daniel Voyer from University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, Canada. Based on research from 1914 through 2011 that spanned more than 30 countries, the study found the differences in grades between girls and boys were largest for language courses and smallest for math and science.
