High marks shock students, officials
BANGALORE: When Rekha (name changed) calculated her score to be 129 in ComedK medical stream this year, she hoped to get a seat in a good medical college in the state. After all, the cut-off mark last year was 114. But when the rank list was published on Wednesday, she was in for a shock -- her rank was over 6,000.
The marks and ranks of ComedK UGET have been the talking point this week. According to ComedK officials, 7,503 students scored marks between 125 and 178 in medical stream and 19 students scored more than 170. Each mark was shared by hundreds of students.
"We were surprised too. We don't know the reason for this exceptional performance. On Friday, we will publish the number of students who shared the same marks for all subjects on the website," said A S Srikanth, chief executive, ComedK.
Interestingly, the number of students who appeared for medical stream had shot up by around 5,000. The officials had said they didn't know the reason for the increase.
The highest mark this time was 178 out of 180. Last year, it was 159. Last time, the cut-off rank for the last MBBS seat in general merit for a ComedK college was 2,995 and the mark of the candidate was 114. This time, the mark of the student who has rank 2995 is 141.
Some parents plan to move court. "It is impossible to believe that so many students have suddenly become brilliant. I checked the results of the past five years and it's never been like this. Going by last year's results, my daughter should have got rank below 800 for 129 marks," said a parent. The exam was, however, reportedly easy.
The ComedK test has already been marred by controversies after 33 students were arrested a day after the exam for impersonation. A CCB inquiry is still under way on the seat-surrendering scam that takes place in ComedK colleges. This year, 47,085 candidates had appeared for medical and dental and 43,179 for engineering stream.
