Teachers go on training, exam dates tweaked
PUNE: The annual examinations in some state board schools will be a little haywire since teachers are away for election duty training. The examinations for students from standard I to standard IX usually begin in the last week of March, but many schools are yet to start the papers. While one session just got over, another session is scheduled in the first week of April. Since it coincides with the examination schedule, schools have had to re-schedule the papers by a day or two. Some schools are getting their administrative staff, lab assistants, and even parents to help conduct the examination.
Vasant Patil, president, All India Secondary and Higher Secondary School Principals' Association, said, "Many schools have to send all their staff for election. We are unclear as to who will ultimately be reporting for election and its related work as all those trained do not necessarily join election duty. Some are kept as reserves. With the training happening now, the exam schedule, planned at the beginning of the academic year, has been disturbed." The association has also brought the upheaval in the exam schedule to the notice of the district collectorate.
Some schools have tweaked the dates of the exams to get around the problem. A teacher at Daulatrao Marathi Medium School in the city said, "When we planned the yearly schedule, we had fixed the final examinations between March 27 and April 8. We conducted the drawing, art and craft exams on March 27 and March 28, while the written exams will begin from April 1. Teachers have to report again for training on April 6, so we have not scheduled any paper on that day. Our exams that were to end on April 8 will now get over by April 11."
Another teacher of a Marathi medium school in the city said the results may be delayed. "Teachers would be able to assess the papers only after they are back from election duty. They will take up the papers for correction around April 19. We usually declare the results on May 1, but there may be a delay of four to five days."
Educationist Heramb Kulkarni said, "This is a common problem when elections are announced. The district administration has a huge responsibility to fulfill. On the other hand, schools have to conduct the examinations with their resources when teachers are fulfilling their duty towards the nation."
